Old Fashioned at Mark’s Bar

Had a new Old Fashioned last night at Mark’s Bar, the downstairs cocktail bar at Hix on Brewer Street in Soho.  The setting is gorgeous – leather chairs, low lighting but not too low, jazz on the hi-fi that segued into acoustic slow versions of Prince songs to give some style to the place.  Very extensive and elaborate cocktail menu.  And we liked that we could eat dinner from the restaurant’s full dinner menu in the downstairs bar without reservations.  The drink itself was the only disappointment – no muddled cherries, nothing bitter or tart at all to give the drink any character; in the end it just tasted like bourbon with a little water and a little simple syrup.  Cloying.  The ice cube, a good two inches on each side, was magnificent, but I can still only give the drink **1/2.  We will definitely go back but I’ll just have a beer.
